Night and Day. I have this on my mind this week because I get up in the dark.

And it is dark when I eat breakfast. When I go to the church. When I start the day's errands or chores. Light shows up eventually, but it is dark earlier and earlier every day. I am especially mindful of the longest night of the year coming. And again, I will remember my Celtic spiritual background of entering the night at the Longest Night service I attended. It was there I found profound meaning because of two opposing things I still ponder at this time of year.

  • That dark is not dark to God.
  • That light is right beside me, about to break into our human existence.

The first visual we saw at the service was a shot of the cosmos taken at night. Genesis immediately came to mind. We spent time with that through Psalm 139:12. And then we saw an image similar to this one from Sister Ansgar Holmberg.

This is the Christ that we are waiting for.

I continue my wondering about the two different images and how they both inspire a sense of awe and wonder in me. I will comment on awe and wonder next week in more detail.

So, where are dark and light with you right now in Advent? Pr. Scott
